The driver for reducing paper at the organization should be for either cost saving or productivity reasons. Regardless, businesses have continued to be sold on concepts instead of actual approaches to reduce paper at their organization. By misappropriating the term paperless office and rolling into it other terms such as document management and enterprise content management the term has become diluted and confusing. All types of technology vendors, hardware, software and technology consultants have for years been selling the “concept” of paperless office to business instead of selling the technology that actually solves their specific business problems. Todd McIndoo of Speedy Solutions states “many small and midsize businesses have missed the “paperless office” boat and the reasons for this are many. The paper is available for download at Scribd. The country supergroup’s third album was stunning testament to finding strength through the bonds of friendship during tough times, and you can practically feel the warmth and sisterhood radiating from the Interstate Gospel cover art. Pistol Annies, ‘Interstate Gospel’ (2018) So when Ariana appeared Spider-Man-style on the cover of Sweetener, it felt right - and the sweetly unassuming confusion of the imagery also fit the musical change-up of the thoughtful, delirious, R&B-heavy set it accompanied beautifully. It wouldn’t be much of an exaggeration to say that Ariana Grande’s entire world got turned upside down in the three years in between 2015’s Dangerous Woman and its 2018 follow-up. As she leans facedown against a Chevrolet suburban, her hair in cornrows and her shoulders covered by a fur coat, the superstar conveys hurt and strength in one impactful image she is forced to take a breather and collect herself, only to strike back harder. The cover art to Beyoncé’s 2016 masterpiece is taken from the “Don’t Hurt Yourself” music video, and immediately hits you with the dual themes of the LP. Set against a black background, the warmth of the photographic portrait(s) is almost palpable. If you didn’t get it from the title Young, Gifted and Black, Aretha Franklin was proudly and boldly representing for the African-American community on this 1972 classic, and the cover photo – which shows two sets of gently smiling Arethas facing each other wearing turban head wraps that glow an earthy orange against stained-glass windows – speaks to her African pride and musical upbringing in the church. Aretha Franklin, ‘Young, Gifted and Black’ (1972) We’ve rounded up a list of the 100 greatest album covers of all time, reaching as far back as the 1930s and running through the birth of rock n’ roll, the start of hip-hop and beyond, right up to present day. It worked, and soon became an indispensable part of the creative process when crafting (and marketing) an album. It all began in 1939 when Alex Steinweiss, a graphic designer who worked at Columbia Records, realized that the label could sell more copies of an album if the cover caught the consumer’s attention. Some album covers are arguably better known than the music inside, having been parodied in pop culture, lauded with awards, used in advertisements or hung up in art museums. The artist might appear front and center, or perhaps they take a backseat entirely, letting evocative imagery pull the listener into their world. You might see photographic portraits, paintings, sketches, collages or nearly nothing at all. Some go for the less-is-more approach, while others are stuffed with a kaleidoscope of imagery for fans to pore over and decipher. Almost since the full-length album format began, cover art has been a key piece of the puzzle, adding visual interest (and occasionally a physically interactive component) to a work of art.įrom the fold-out gatefolds of the vinyl era to pull-out liner notes in CD jewel cases to the small icon on a digital player, cover art has changed over the years, but it still helps define how we look at a particular album. Yes, the sounds are certainly the most essential element, but a lot of other things go into making an album a classic. And you're equipped with a handy mnemonic, that splice compared to slice has an additional letter, 'p', which helps you remember that splice mutates and optionally adds or removes from the original array. In JavaScript, array.splice() is a built-in function that modifies an array by adding new elements to it or removing/replacing the existing elements from it. You now know that slice makes a shallow copy of the original array, while splice mutates the original array and optionally adds or removes elements. ConclusionĪnd there we have it! This blog goes over the differences between slice and splice. And because splice can add and remove stuff to the original array, that means that it also mutates the original array. Because of the extra letter, I associate the additional letter to splice's use of adding or removing from the original array. splice has an extra letter, 'p', compared to slice. The JavaScript splice () method modifies an array. Spline is a free 3D design software with real-time collaboration to create web interactive experiences in the browser. I remember the difference between slice and splice using a mnemonic. Note: This method changes the original array. insert 'juliet' and 'zeke' at 3rd index // returns Ĭonsole. The splice() method adds/removes items to/from an array, and returns the removed item(s). splice ( 3, 1, 'juliet', 'zeke' ) // remove 'harper'. Also Read: “Kobe Bryant was scoring 5 points at a time”: Heat legend Chris Bosh opens up about the Black Mamba’s historic 81-point performance I think wiring is an inherant part of our industry. Also, in these REALLY large pieces, we use no wire, but rather position the hangers up and down, and tell the customer s/he should hang it on two hooks rather than one to reduce the strain on the moulding. If the moulding is a nice wide, deep moulding, we will use the large 3-hole hangers with bracing straps, and use 3/4" screws to secure them. On larger pieces (32x40 and over) we use the largest mirror hangers we can that won't be seen on the edge of the frame, and the longest screws the frame can handle. So we keep very few screw eyes on hand at any time. On small pieces where the moulding is so thin that the mirror hangers would show, THEN we use screw eyes. I don't like screw eyes at all for the simple reason is they can damage the piece next to it when stored, creating a whole new headache. For the bulk of our wiring jobs we use small and large, 1-,2-, or 3-hole mirror hangers with the D-rings at the ends. Yes, I know smaller screws would solve the problem, but I'm working with what is available, and wallbuddies insists on providing fat screws. I've had a number of small hardwood frames split because they weren't drilled first, even beeswax doesn't help at times. However, we don't drill where I work now, so I use beeswax a lot. Personally, drilling is the one and only right way to screw anything into wood. John, won't the glue rust the screws if you put glue on them? Z bar is another great hanger for some frames.Īnother very good hanger for Acrylic boxes is a cleat which I can't describe, maybe someone else can. For those customers we use tiny screw eyes and super soft strand even if it is 4 x 5 or 2 x 3, corny, but we aim to please. Some customers just don't like sawtooth hangers (I love them). When wire is required we use the Sevalon system, the one with the sleeves that you crimp, and the 4 hole or 2 hole super hangers. Engineers love them, architects love them, but we never put them on an artists work. Some customers abhor them and some insist on them. The Wallbuddies for metal frames are great. We use both large and small Wall buddies. We use wall buddies on most frames over 11 x 14. I think there is a use for all the above. (Some have called me for directions on using the standard picture hooks that nail into the wall. Nor would they enjoy leveling frames with strap hangers. I use Wall Buddies on "very horizontal" frames (like those panoramic stadium photos and Blakeway posters.) Most of my customers love Wall Buddies, but would not appreciate them on 11x14 frames. I use Flangers and Zerlon on small frames with very narrow mouldings. The Wall Buddies actually add strength to the frame. Both are much easier to level than strap hangers and very strong. Larger than 20x24: Wall Buddies or Hook-ups. I keep shifting the Super-Hanger threshhold to smaller sizes - I seem to be phasing out screw eyes. I figure if I need the 4-hole job, I'm not going to use wire. Super hangers are those flat one-piece plates with the integrated "ring" for wire. Normally two hooks supplied to customer.ġ4x18 to 20x24: 2-hole Super Hanger and Zerlon wire. Under 8x10: Sawtooth hanger and brass-headed nail (no hook, Linda.)Ĩx10 to about 14x18: Screw eyes and Zerlon wire. Since I work alone - and exert very little influence here - I won't be corrupting any young minds. Life is short, choose your battles, its just wire! Some still beg for wire, then I have them sign my work order. On long pieces and heavy items I use Strap hangers and advise my client to use a level and measre twice and hang once. I have also worked with many professional installers that prefer to hang on the "hinges, d hooks or strap hangers" which is nice because it saves you time and money. If they bring in an item that is too heavy and they don't want to listen to your advice, refuse to do the work or have them sign a work order releasing you of any liability. I tell them it is not recommended but they insist on putting thier life and that of others in harms way, and we live in earthquake country!!! I have replaced fishing line, string, electrical wiring, twine, rope, extension cords, shoe string, chain or anything these people can tie a knot in. I have had many clients bring in those store bought mirrors and ask for wire. We still use wire because our customers want the ease of using one nail to hang overweight oversized mirrors above beds and couches. Columbus decided to return to Spain for supplies, leaving his brother Bartholomew in charge of Hispaniola. The new settlers he brought quickly grew discouraged by the exaggerated claims of gold on the island. Upon his return to Hispaniola, the settlement he founded on his first landing, Columbus discovered it decimated by disease and war with the natives. The Spanish crown ordered Columbus to Christianize all the natives he encountered. Also on the expedition were settlers encouraged by promises of large quantities of gold in the islands. Impressed by the gold, spices, and human captives Columbus brought back from his first expedition, the Spanish crown authorized a quick turnaround for his next voyage with a significantly larger fleet of seventeen ships and 1200 men. He also did not know that the Western Hemisphere blocked his path. He assumed the globe was smaller than it is, so his estimate of how long the trip would take was unrealistic. If a sea route could be discovered, it promised to make trade with Asian nations more profitable and gain access to goods not found or produced in Europe.Ĭolumbus’s insight was to reach the East by sailing west. Traveling overland was long, arduous, and dangerous. The challenge had engaged European thinkers since the days of early Rome. “They would make fine servants… With fifty men we could subjugate them all and make them do whatever we want.” Though he was denied permission to enslave natives on at least one occasion, Columbus and his men ignored the restriction, enslaving hundreds throughout his career.Ĭolumbus was not the first to seek a sea route from Europe to Asia. “They do not bear arms, and do not know them, for I showed them a sword, they took it by the edge and cut themselves out of ignorance …,” he recorded in his diary. His experiences may have contributed to his assessment of the people he encountered in the New World as people to exploit for his purposes. These facts paint a picture of a driven, ambitious man determined to make his mark in a violent and dangerous world. It also surprised me that before Columbus secured financial support for his first expedition from Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabella of Castille, he embarked on a comprehensive self-study of mathematics, astronomy, navigation, and cartography, subjects he needed to master to implement his plan. Nor did I know that when he was 25, by clinging to his ship’s debris and floating to shore in Portugal, he survived a pirate attack that destroyed and sank his vessel. For example, I did not know that 11-year-old Christopher Columbus’s first sailing experience was on a merchant ship. Columbus’s voyages, especially trips two, three, and four, are no exception. I always learn things I either did not know or had forgotten. One benefit of contributing to our We the Teachers blog is the opportunity to research various topics in American history. Given the variety of viewpoints about Columbus, it is no wonder some try to simplify his story. “After five centuries, Columbus remains a mysterious and controversial figure who has been variously described as one of the greatest mariners in history, a visionary genius, a mystic, a national hero, a failed administrator, a naïve entrepreneur, and a ruthless and greedy imperialist.” Though he failed to achieve his goal, his voyages launched a new age of European exploration, colonization, and a nightmare for the indigenous Caribbean people. Columbus’s last voyage left Europe on May 11, 1502, and continued his quest for a sea route to China, this time by exploring the coastal areas west of the Caribbean islands. This simple lesson ignores the broader story of Christopher Columbus’s four voyages to the New World and the impact those explorations had on Europe and the Americas. It’s a simple rhyme, taught to thousands of young children when most history instruction focused on names and dates. “In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue.” |
